I am starting up a computer repair shop in my town and one of my plans i would like to do is to buy used computers, refurbish and resell them. I have hit a hard spot though. Most of the PCs im finding have no OS and PC people want to trade in with me, they want completely erased (understadably). How can I go about getting an Operating system onto these systems other than buying OEM software (since it’s like 100 extra bucks)

Re-install the original OS utilizing the original key or install one of the Linux’s. They’re open source OS’s. Knoppix is a very popular version.

You must be wary, though, because your customers will want service after the sale and you must be prepared to answer questions about Linux!!!!

My PC turned off 3 times today -it’s an eMachines product and tech support won’t help me since it’s refurbished. Time to get a new computer? It’s only 3 years old.

Your first problem is it’s an eMachines computer – they’re junk. In general there is nothing wrong with refurbished machines as they’ve gone through a complete overhaul back at the factory and (usually) have a full warranty when you buy them. If it’s three years old it is most likely out of warranty and it’s up the manufacturer if they want to touch it or not. Usually they will for a fee, but if they don’t that gives you an idea of how good their systems are if they won’t stand behind them. When the computer turns off on it’s own (and it isn’t house power related) that it usually a sign of the power supply dying or there is a problem with the CPU fan causing the CPU to overheat. Both are relatively cheap fixes (under $50) but if your not handy, you’ll have to take the computer in for repair. Try your local computer shop for the best price.

Like I have said before I really need and am very desperate for a laptop! I will do anyhting for one! I will even take one that is really scratched up!! I would like a site that has used, scratched, refurbished or in any condition: laptops!! So pls pls help me out here!

But perhaps you’ll consider spending just a little more to be happy. The Apple Store has a number of refurbished units, they’re like factory new, they come in a brown box instead of original packaging. But you can save a hundred dollars or more off the retail price of their new laptops. The warranty will be better through the Apple Store.

Just scroll down the page, look for the Special Deals tag, select "Refurbished" and wouldn’t you know it, there’s a bunch of deals for you. MacBooks from $849, I know that sounds like a lot but they’re worth it.
