Is one brand better than the other when it comes to laptop computers? Anything particular I should look for?
I will probably be getting one on Ebay as I am on a very small budget. I have looked and it is possible to find, I am just not sure if the brand makes a difference. BTW, all the ram, gig, bites whatever its called, really doesn’t make much sense to me. Thank for any advice/info.
Ok, I’ll start by explaining the hardware, if you want, you can skip over that and just read the warnings:
RAM: (Random Access Memory) Think of this as the table that your computer puts stuff on when it’s going to use it. Obviously, if you have room on the table to organize things, it makes them a lot easier to use. So more MB (Megabytes) or GB (Gigabytes) of RAM means more table space. (Note: 1GB = 1,000MB)
Processor: This is the little guy running around organizing things on the table and pulling them up when you need them. The more GHz (Gigahertz) the processor has, the faster he can move. And if a processor mentions multiple "Cores" think of that as the guy has an identical twin helping him out.
Hard Drive (HD): This is the store room, the more GB it has, the more space it has. The average program takes about 2 Gigs (GBs) of hard drive space. And you can usually hold about 500 songs per GB. So the more storage space the better.
Ok, so those are the three big things you want to look at, you also want to keep in mind "does it have a DVD?" and such. But I’m sure you already figured that one out.
As for warnings: Alienware is good, Dell is decent, HP is ok, Gateway is ok, Toshiba is crummy, Compaq is bad, and E-Machines is HORRIBLE! (Note, I rated them only in reliability, as that is the only thing consistent from PC to PC) And if your looking at Apple… that’s a whole difforent ball game, and usually an expensive one. But the Apple I-books are reliable and apple offers all kinds of great free software that you’ll have trouble finding for PC.
Just keep your eyes peeled and you should be fine, feel free to contact me if you have any more questions about hardware, want more details about a company, or just want to say hi to someone random.
