My in-laws are looking for a refurbished or new laptop for under $400…. they’ve had no luck, so I’ve been asked to look for them.

If it’s refurbished… how do you know it’s not going to crap out on them 2 months down the line? What do I look for in a used laptop?

I don’t know if you know what refurbished is, but the only negative thing about it is that it has a fairly small warranty in place (usually 90 days). This means that you’ll have to purchase an extended warranty, which you’ll probably already purchase if you’re buying a new laptop.

Refurbished merely means that a person bought it, didn’t like color or the size of it, etc, and took it back. Refurbished laptops are then checked once again for any defects and are placed back on the shelves as "refurbished" because they technically can’t be sold as new. I guarantee that a new laptop would crap out far sooner than a refurbished one because it went through manufacturer testing only and was shipped to stores. No other steps were taken to ensure it’s quality, unlike refurbished ones.

Quality? Make sure cosmetically it’s intact. Make sure non of the warranty seals were broken, and run a few boot up tests on it when you first get it to make sure there aren’t any dead pixels, hard drive error, etc. Enjoy it. Basically you’re getting a new computer for half the price.
