you can get decent computers for around 1000 dollars (£500) probably less than a thousand dollars im not american so dont know, my pc cost me £550, its got 4gb ram,xfx 9600gt, WD 640gb hdd, intel core 2 quad 2.4ghz, so its easily possible with desktops, it also came with a 19″ screen
