All Eyes Were on Tablets at CES in Las Vegas
I’m Alex Villarreal with the VOA Special English Technology Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish
Tablet computers were the stars of this year’s Consumer Electronics Show. The international gathering in Las Vegas, Nevada, is the world’s biggest technology trade show. Companies launched more than eighty handheld computers similar to the popular Apple iPad. Tara Dunion from the Consumer Electronics Association is a spokeswoman for the show which ended January ninth. She said twenty eleven is going to be the year of the tablet. There are going to be many different kinds of products available. Examples include a new Wi-Fi version of the Galaxy Tab made by Samsung of South Korea. The Taiwanese company Asus announced four new tablets for this year. One of them can connect to a keyboard to make it more like a laptop computer. Another has a keyboard that slides out. Both of these tablets use Google’s new Android Honeycomb operating system. Motorola, based in the United States, also demonstrated that system on its new Xoom tablet.Reporter Arash Aalaei from VOA’s Persian News Network was at the show. He says more and more companies are offering 3-D images on devices like tablets and notebook computers. There are 3-D Blu-ray players, cameras, camcorders and printers. He looked at the newest three-dimensional televisions, including some that require no special eyewear. He said Toshiba introduced a new line of televisions that enable users to watch 3-D without wearing the glasses.Arash Aalaei also looked at some of the different products marketed as green technology at the show. He said many companies are selling products that run on solar energy or wind energy to recharge cell phones or other small devices. And, speaking of phones, Tara Dunion says smartphones keep getting smarter. She said “super phones” have fourth-generation chips in them that permit immediate access to videos and photos. Popular products at the Consumer Electronics Show also included Internet TVs and devices to stream video onto existing high-definition sets. More than one hundred twenty thousand people attended the show. One big announcement involved the British company ARM and the Microsoft Windows operating system. Microsoft said the next version of Windows will work on devices that use ARM processors. For VOA Special English, I’m Alex Villarreal.

Pads, E-Readers, Notebook Computers Topped Wish Lists
I’m Alex Villarreal with the VOA Special English Technology Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish
A report by the Consumer Electronics Association says electronics were among the most popular gifts bought this holiday season. It also predicted that spending on these devices would set new records. The CEA said consumers were expected to spend an average of about two hundred thirty dollars on electronics. This is five percent more than in two thousand nine and the highest level since the organization began keeping records of holiday spending. Jim Barry is a spokesman for the Consumer Electronics Association. He said the CEA study found that electronics represented three of the top five things on its Holiday Gift Wish List in two thousand ten. He said: “Notebook computers are at the top, followed by iPads and then e-readers. IPad is a touch-screen tablet computer and that’s really the big player in that category.” The computer company Apple began selling its small, touch-screen computers in April. People use the touch-screen computers to surf the Web, write e-mails, watch movies and read books. Since the iPad’s release, several other companies came out with their own tablet computers just in time for Christmas. A report from the e-Marketer research group predicts that worldwide tablet sales will reach more than eighty-one million in two thousand twelve. Still, Jim Barry says these devices faced tough competition from another Christmas favorite. He said: “Another hot category right behind that are the e-readers. So you can read on an iPad or a touch-screen tablet, but the e-book readers are less expensive. The Kindle is the market leader there from Amazon. But you also have the Nook from Barnes and Noble and the e-reader from Sony.”Jim Barry says modern technology is changing the way people relate and increasing their expectations for their electronic devices. He said: “It’s really the ability to take your information and entertainment with you just about anywhere to stay connected to your work and your family.” The Consumer Electronics Association report found that iPod music players were also in high demand this holiday season. So were video game systems and digital cameras. But not all of the things on the holiday gift wish list involved electronics. The one thing that people wanted most? Jim Barry said: “At the top of the list was peace and happiness.” For VOA Special English, I’m Alex Villarreal.

How To Make a YouTube Video – Pirate Lifestyle TV ™ Quickie 028
http://www.PirateLifestyle.com Quickie for the all NEW Pirate Lifestyle TV Show. How you can create your own videos.
Christmas is rapidly approaching and you are probably thinking about what to put on your Wish List.
I receive lots of questions asking about what I use to make these videos.
What camera do I use?
Do I use lights? Do I use a mic?
What video editor do I use?
And more.
So, this quickie is about how you can create your own videos, like I make Pirate Lifestyle TV videos.
When I started uploading videos to YouTube they weren’t even videos. I didn’t have a camera so I took photos, actual photos, and scanned them. I used my laptop to record sounds for my videos, and I used the free moviemaker editor to make slideshows.
Then we got a still frame digital camera. I discovered it could shoot short videos, but had no sound. So I made short videos and dubbed the audio. They look like badly dubbed foreign films.
These Pirate Lifestyle TV videos are shot with a HD flip camera I found on sale for 80ish dollars. I did invest in, and now use, a high quality video editor.
My point.
It doesn’t matter what equipment you use. Yes, better equipment will make good videos better. But complicated equipment is, well, complicated and if you don’t understand how to use it, it will be frustrating at best and might even make your videos worse.
Plus, if you wait until you have the equipment of your dreams, you aren’t making videos at all. What matters is you start doing something right now, with what you have available.
