Aaron and I met up with Kevin and Morgan at Rob Schnapf’s studio in Eagle Rock, where Kevin was mixing his new record while in LA for the month, on the morning of Friday the 13th. Sure, it seems kind of silly for me to be rolling into one of the nicer studios in Los Angeles with a couple okay mic’s and plugging in my laptop to record a band, but we really wanted to do this session while Kevin was in town and it seemed like a good use of the studio while Rob was in the other room mixing (although, I think Rob might have been kind of annoyed at the whole situation, but he was a good sport about it). It was actually a surprisingly slow moving setup (for only two people), or not so much slow, as “leisurely paced” (there was a lot of sitting around outside, chatting, mexican food, red vines, coffee, Mark Chalecki came over to hang out for a bit).

Morgan and Kevin met this past year at SXSW, and had sort of instantly hit it off (not surprisingly as two insanely talented musicians, but also two of the nicest, cheerful, easygoing people ever). So when Kevin came out to the West Coast (to finish his album and play a few shows), and couldn’t bring his band out with him, he asked Morgan if she’d sit in on a few intimate acoustic shows with him, which of course, worked out splendidly. If you were lucky enough to catch one of his weekly residencies at Hotel Cafe, you can attest to the dynamic energy of the nights (and the rare occurrence of a room full of Hollywood hipsters so enthralled actually listening to the performers that you could hear a pin drop in that room).

Part 1: Connecting Laptop to TV.

Step 1 using S Video Cable: Connecting the MX S-Video Cable to the laptop with other end to the TV. For Audio connect a separate EP to 2 RCA Cable.

Step 2 using VGA Cable: Connecting the MX VGA Cable to laptop and other end to TV. For Audio connect a EP to EP stereo cable.

Step 3 using HDMI Cable: Connecting the MX HDMI Cable to laptop and other end to TV for Full definition HD Display.

Step 4 using DVI Cable: Connect the MX HDMI to DVI Cable with HDMI to laptop and DVI to the TV end.

Part 2: Connecting Mac to TV:

Step 1 using Mini Display Port to VGA Adapter: Connect Mini Display port Adapter end to the Mac and other end to a VGA Cable which goes into the TV.

Step 2 using Mini Display port to Hdmi Adapter: Connect Mini Display port Adapter end to Mac and other end to a Hdmi Cable which goes into the TV.

Step 3 using Mini Display Port to DVI Adapter: Connect Mini Display port Adapter end to Mac and the other end to a DVI Cable which goes into the TV through an HDMI.

Here is a video showing how to setup a Hauppauge HD PVR to record your Xbox 360 or PS3 gaming. This device captures FULL 720p HD video in M2TS format and is more than worth the $$$ for anyone interested in capturing their gaming in STUNNING quality. http://www.hauppauge.com/site/product…

Although this is an excellent device, it does have a few drawbacks if you’re not prepared. Please read below for details.

1) You need AT LEAST a dual core PC with AT LEAST 1 gig of RAM. The same goes for laptops! (Yes this does work with Macs now. BUT you’ll need a program called eyeTV 3.1 to capture the video as the archsoft capture software is not compatible with Mac

2) You need AT LEAST a 256 meg Video Card. I recommend a 512 or higher. I run a 1 gig video card, and I still experience some lag when editing…

3) You NEED HD video editing software that will recognize the M2TS files produced by the Hauppauge. (I use Sony Vegas Pro 9.0c, but Pinnacle Studio and Corel Video Studio work as well.)

If you have all the above, video capturing should be easy as pie, and you’ll have stunning HD quality videos on YouTube in no time!
